After School Programs

Peaceful Schools PEACE THROUGH THE ARTS PROGRAMS

Duration of each of the following programs is typically 2 sessions per week for 10 weeks for a total of 20 sessions. In addition each program creates a culminating performance or final project to be presented within individual classrooms or when feasible at a school wide assembly.

Each of the following programs incorporates social skill development as one foundation for the selected activities in each session. In addition, a service-learning component may be incorporated in any of these programs as appropriate by age and development of students involved.
  • Peace Through Drama
    This program is designed for students in grades 2-8 who have an interest in the performing arts. Students are engaged in activities that allow them to develop stage presence as they prepare a dramatic performance.

  • Peace Through Movement
    This program is designed for students in grades K-8 who have an interest in movement and dance. A combination of rhythm and physical movement will be used to engage students as they select and prepare a movement performance.
  • Peace Through Music
    This program is designed for students in grades K-8 who have an interest in creating and performing music. A combination of rhythm and rhyme will be used to engage students as they select and prepare songs for their performance.

  • Peace Through Literature
    This program is designed for students in grades K-8 who have an interest in reading and writing stories and poems. Students will read and discuss stories and then participate in coordinated activities that engage their writing skills around the
    selected theme. Students will choose stories or poems to present to classrooms within their school.

  • Peace Through Self-Expression
    This program is designed for students in grades K-8 who have an interest in creating works of art, using multiple mediums including paint, pencil, chalk and more. Students will focus reflect on important aspects of their communities and
    select projects to express how they feel. Artwork will be displayed within the school.



SERVICE LEARNING PROGRAMS

Duration of each of the following programs is typically 2 sessions per week for 10 weeks for a total of 20 sessions. A final project or event is typically incorporated in each program depending on program selected, age and developmental level of participants.

  • Peaceful People
    This program is designed for students in grades 4 or higher, interested in presenting Peaceful People activities and lessons with elementary students. Participants explore the components of peace and social competence and receive training and practice in the presentation of the elementary Peaceful People curriculum. This program can be adopted as an after school club that promotes civic responsibility and the students can perform their lessons as a service learning project.

  • Leadership Club
    This program is designed for students in grades 4 or higher who have received prior training in Peer Mediation. Leadership club promotes the development of mediation skills and engages students in activities to promote student participation in mediation through public service announcements, posters, and public presentations at school-wide assemblies. In addition participants in the Leadership Club work together to select service activities such as the walk for juvenile diabetes as a special focus project.

  • Peace Club
    This program is designed for students in grades 3 or higher who have an interest in public service. Participants are engaged in cooperative team building and are guided through the process of selecting a service project. For example students may decide to form a partnership with the local SPCA. A member of the SPCA may then be invited discuss animal needs with the students and then the students may brainstorm a way to provide a solution. For example the SPCA may need toys to keep the animals occupied and the students may decide to make animal toys for donation to the SPCA.




PROGRAM COORDINATION

  • For each site that is selecting multiple PRL programs, a program coordinator is assigned to facilitate on-site project management. The Peaceful School Coordinator typically provides both coordination and participates as a presenter educator.

  • The Peaceful School Coordinator and support staff will work with identified school staff to select from Service Learning, Peace Through the Arts Programs or a combination of both.

  • PRL will assign a Peaceful School Coordinator who will assist in the planning, development and implementation of after school and vacation & recreational programs focused on character, conflict resolution, citizenship, and civility.

  • The Peaceful School Coordinator will work with school and PRL staff to align regular day and after school/vacation & recreational programs.

  • The Peaceful School Coordinator will supervise PRL staff on site.

  • The extent to which the Peaceful School Coordinator is involved is determined by the individual needs assessment for each participating school

  • Please refer to the Job Descriptions of Participants section for a detailed listing of the responsibilities that a site may select for the Peaceful School Coordinator to assume.
